SE QLD Wide Area Network

Node 6958 provides a network gateway rather than serving only one local repeater.

How the network operates

The SE QLD Wide Area Network interconnects participating amateur radio repeaters. Local radio traffic and linked IRLP or EchoLink traffic may be repeated across the wider network.

Because several sites may be connected, allow additional time between transmissions for links and repeaters to reset.

Using EchoIRLP

  • Listen carefully and confirm the network is clear.
  • Identify using your amateur radio callsign.
  • Use the appropriate DTMF command where remote linking is enabled.
  • Leave a 3–4 second pause between overs.
  • Disconnect an established temporary link when finished, where required.

Operating Guidelines

Simple practices that help the SE QLD Wide Area Network operate reliably.

    Before you connect

    Listen first, confirm the network is clear, identify yourself, then pause before dialling a node, reflector, link or conference.

    During a QSO

    Leave 2–3 seconds between overs, speak slowly and clearly, and use phonetics for your callsign and name when helpful.

    After use

    The station that established the link should disconnect with DTMF 73, unless another station clearly takes responsibility.

  4. 4

    General courtesy

    Respect local repeater traffic, do not discuss restricted access commands, and remember that linked transmissions may be heard across several repeaters and a wide audience.

Important network limitation

IRLP connects only to IRLP nodes and reflectors. EchoLink connects only to EchoLink stations, links, repeaters and conferences. Node 6958 supports both networks but does not cross-connect them.

Timeout protection

Release PTT every 2–3 minutes and leave a 3–4 second pause before transmitting again. This protects the repeater system, allows linked repeaters time to reset, and gives urgent traffic an opportunity to break in.

Assistance and troubleshooting

Common connection messages and what they usually mean.

“The node you are calling is not responding”
There may be a loss of internet connectivity at one end of the call attempt. Wait briefly and try again.
“Beep Error” or the call attempt timed out
The remote node may be offline, busy, using an unreliable connection, or experiencing a temporary network problem.
“The connection has been lost”
The internet connection dropped while the link was active.
“The node you are calling is currently connected to…”
The remote node is already connected to another node or reflector.
“The node you are calling is being used locally”
There is local activity on the remote repeater or frequency. Try again later.
Busy signal
The node may not be linked, but the local repeater or node hardware is being used for another function.
